The Swan Coastal Plain around Perth is more than 100,000 years old. The Noongar people of Perth believe that the Darling Scarp represents the body of a Waugal - a rainbow serpent of the Dreamtime that wandered over the land creating rivers, waterways and lakes. The Waugal was believed to inhabit unique areas of the land, which were and still are, sacred to Aboriginal people. It is believed that the Waugal created the Swan River.
