Catch a train, join a cruise, or drive to the colourful port city of Fremantle.

Fremantle is a fantastic microcosm of culture and heritage. The city is famous for its array of multicultural restaurants and eateries, the infamous cappuccino strip, micro breweries, markets and range of fascinating shops and galleries.

Fremantle is also known as having the worlds best preserved example of a 19th century port streetscape and lays claim to Western Australia's largest collection of heritage listed buildings.

Fremantle is home to a range of fantastic museums, galleries and iconic sites – making it one of the best places to learn about Western Australia’s pioneer history.

  • Fremantle Prison was built by convicts in the 1850s and was closed as a place of imprisonment in 1991 after 136 years of continuous use. In 1992 it was opened to the public as a heritage and tourist site. The prison offers a range of tours that engage and inform. The Fremantle Prison is a wheelchair accessible tourist attraction.
  • Western Australian Museum – Maritime, provides exhibitions of shipwrecks and WA’s maritime history across three sites: the Maritime Museum, the Shipwreck Galleries and the Submarine Ovens.
  • The Army Museum of Western Australia houses, conserves and displays collections of Western Australia's Army heritage.
  • The Fremantle Markets site was originally built as a market hall in 1897 and is now home to an eclectic and enduring collection of shops, stalls and entertainment.

Some of the Western Australia’s most popular seafood restaurants and cafés can be found around the Fishing Boat Harbour area – the perfect environment to sample the best of what the Indian Ocean has to offer.

Fremantle is easily accessed by train, bus or cruise down the river from Perth.

Location: Fremantle is located 19 kilometres south west of the city of Perth.

As soon as you walk into Freo the pace slows down and you chill out. Even with new buildings and shops opening up, the character and charm of the place remains the same. The cappucino strip will always be an institution!

Fremantle holds a certain mystery to any visitor. From cafes to markets, from, tug boats to aircraft carriers, dolphins to seals, there is always something exciting happening. My favourite time to visit is in the morning when before the hussle.
