The Bell Tower, an 82.5 metre high copper and glass campanile, was custom built to house the Swan Bells.
The Swan Bells are a collection of eighteen bells and include the bells of Saint Martin-in-the-Fields: an Anglican church located at the northeast corner of Trafalgar Square in the City of Westminster, London.
It is believed that the twelve bells of St Martin-in-the-Fields have been in existence since the 14th century.
The bells were a gift to the University of Western Australia, the City of Perth and the people of Western Australia to commemorate Australia’s bicentenary in 1988.
The Bell Tower gives visitors the opportunity to see the Swan Bells working and to experience the English folk art of change ringing.
Other features of the Bell Tower include:
- The Turret Clock – the restored late-Victorian turret clock, rescued from the demolished Grandstand at Royal Ascot Racecourse in the United Kingdom.
- The Asian Bell Collection – a rare collection of Asian bells.
- Library – a significant collection of rare books, journals and papers on church bells, change ringing, clocks and carillons.
Location: the Bell Tower is located at Barrack Square, on Riverside Drive in the city of Perth.
