The spectacular Windjana Gorge forms part of the Devonian barrier reef system which is over 350 million years old.
The walls of the gorge rise abruptly from the wide alluvial floodplain of the Lennard River and reach up to 100 metres in height in places. The Lennard River winds its way through the limestone of the Napier Range and over time has forged the 3.5 kilometre gorge. During the wet season the river flows free. Deep fresh water pools develop and these are surrounded by native figs, paper bark cadjeputs and liechardt trees.
The Bunaba people are the traditional owners of the land in this area and the Windjana Gorge holds deep cultural significance for them.
The park is accessible by unsealed roads during the dry season and is inaccessible during the wet summer months. Camping is permitted at designated camping grounds that are operated by the Department of Environment and Conservation within Windjana Gorge National Park.
Tour operators run a range of day and extended tours to the Windjana Gorge National Park from Derby or Broome.
