The Stairway, or Staircase to the Moon, is visible from March to October for three nights each month.
The breathtaking natural phenomenon is caused by the reflection of the rising full moon over exposed mudflats at extreme low tide. The effect produces an optical illusion of stairs ascending to the moon.
The best viewing points are at Roebuck Bay in Broome, Cooke Point in Port Hedland, the Lookout at Cossack, Hearson's Cove near Karratha and Sunrise Beach in Onslow.
The Staircase Markets are held at Town Beach, Broome during Staircase dates. You can check out local crafts, sample local fare and take in some entertainment.
Visit Australia’s North West for moon dates and times for 2008.
Location: Broome is located 2,175 kilometres north of Perth.
