Karijini National Park

Two billion year old scenery lies at the heart of Karijini National Park. Prepare to be awestruck by the incredible landscape: deep gorges, emerald coloured pools and permanent waterfalls.

One of the big attractions of Karijini National Park is that its magnificent scenery is so accessible – and it is the second largest national park in Western Australia.

The park is home to Mount Bruce (Bunurrunha), Western Australia’s second highest mountain. The Mount Bruce climb is one of Western Australia’s most spectacular walks and provides stunning panoramic views all the way to the 1165 metre summit.

The area is home to the Banyjima, Kurrama and Innawonga Aboriginal people. The Banyjima name for the mountain range in the area is Karijini. Evidence of the occupation of these people in this area dates back more than 20,000 years.

The Karijini National Park has a lot to offer. Highlights include:

  • Fortescue Falls, Circular Pool and Fern Pool – Dales Gorge.
  • Joffre Gorge Lookout – an unusual curved wall forms a natural amphitheatre.
  • Kalimina Gorge – walk along the bottom of the gorge and appreciate the incredible rock structure.
  • Oxer Lookout – view the junction of four mighty gorges: Red, Weano, Joffre and Hancock.
  • Weano Gorge – take an easy walk down the steps to the basin and meander between the layered rock walls and paperbark pools to Handrail Pool, which is great for swimming.
  • Red Gorge and Knox Gorge – discover the sand bars and the streams of crystal clear water that flow at the bottom of these gorges.

The Karijini National Park Visitor Centre is worth a visit. The design of the award winning building represents a goanna moving through the land and is symbolic to the Banyjima people. The tail of the goanna represents their history, the head represents the future and the direction of the traditional land owners, and Aboriginal Law lies at the centre or stomach.

The Karijini Eco Retreat is 100% owned by the Gumala Aboriginal Corporation and is located in the Savannah Campground, 35 kilometres from the Karijini Visitor Centre. The retreat is a unique and ecologically sound accommodation site that offers quality accommodation, facilities and activities.

Location:  Karijini National Park is located 310 kilometres from Roebourne and 1400 kilometres from Perth.

The best thing about living and working in the Pilbara is being able to do day trips out to Karajini! It is absolutely amazing!
