Dampier Archipelago and Mackerel Islands
Rating

ranking: 59

The Dampier Archipelago comprises 42 islands and in 2007 was included in Australia’s National Heritage List for its outstanding Aboriginal heritage values. The heritage area covers approximately 370 square kilometres of the Dampier Archipelago, the Burrup Peninsula and the adjacent mainland of the Western Australian Pilbara coast.

The Montebello Islands, located about 130 kilometres west of Dampier are a group of 100 low-lying limestone islands surrounded by white sandy beaches and turquoise green waters. Twenty-five of the islands within the archipelago make up reserves for the conservation of flora and fauna, making the Dampier Archipelago one of the largest and most bio-diverse areas of the Western Australian coastline.

This is a spectacular region for nature and marine life. Up to six species of marine mammals are often sighted in the waters, including the dugong and the bottlenose dolphin. Humpback whales are regularly seen between July and September, as they make their way to temperate subtropical waters to mate and give birth. Green, loggerhead, flatback and hawksbill turtles use the beaches for nesting, along with 26 species of seabirds. Snorkellers and divers will find plenty of inspiration and the area also offers world-class fishing spots for deep water, reef or sheltered inlet fishing.

The Mackerel Islands and surrounding reef system provide a valuable connection for marine life from the Ningaloo Reef to the Montebello Barrow Island group, the Dampier Archipelago and the Rowley Shoals.

Thevenard Island is the biggest island in the group and has simple family and single accommodation.

Fishing and diving charters operate from Onslow offering a fantastic aquatic holiday adventure.

Location: the Dampier Archipelago lies off the coast of Dampier, which is about 20 kilometres north west of Karratha. The Mackerel Islands can be found 22 kilometres off the coast of Onslow, which is 315 kilometres from Karratha and 410 kilometres from Exmouth.
