Rating
8.67
ranking: 28

The Dampier Peninsula is the perfect getaway for the adventurous traveller. The area offers unspoiled coastline and unique indigenous cultural experiences.

Highlights of the area include:

  • Taking a stroll on a secluded beach at Middle Lagoon.
  • Swimming or snorkelling in the sparkling waters.
  • A visit to the Sacred Heart Church to see its beautiful pearl shell altar, built by the Pallottines (Society of the Catholic Apostolate) and the Aboriginal people of Beagle Bay in 1917.
  • Meeting the locals to learn about remote community life with Lombadina Aboriginal Adventures.
  • Mud crabbing with a local guide.
  • Scenic tours to Sunday Island.

Cape Leveque is a beautiful hidden pocket of the Kimberley, located on the tip of the Dampier Peninsula. The drive from Broome to Cape Leveque includes 200 kilometres of unsealed road.

  • A four wheel drive vehicle is strongly recommended for travel in this area.
  • The road is not suitable for caravans.
  • Allow three and a half hours for the drive from Broome to Cape Leveque.
  • During the summer wet season the road will sometimes be closed.

Accommodation can be found at the Aboriginal owned Kooljaman at Cape Leveque, a wilderness camp that offers a range of accommodation, including safari tents, beach cabins and shelters, units and camping facilities.

The Dampier Peninsula has limited facilities; camping sites (without power) and bush shelters are available for self sufficient travellers. Lombadina Aboriginal Adventures offer cabin and budget accommodation and a range of tours.

A visit to the Dampier Peninsula involves entering Aboriginal land. It is imperative that you respect the land, the culture and the privacy of local people where access is restricted.

The key to a rewarding visit to the Dampier Peninsula is to be prepared. Fuel and stores can be purchased, though in limited amounts, and are only available at certain locations and times. It is important to note the following:

  • Dogs are not permitted in the area.
  • Alcohol cannot be purchased anywhere on the Dampier Peninsula.
  • All accommodation is limited and should be booked well in advance.
  • Medical facilities are limited.

Location: the Dampier Peninsula extends 200 kilometres north of Broome along the unsealed Cape Leveque Road.

You need to make the effort to get to this place. It is just breath taking. The colours are spectacular from the sky, water, sand and red dirt. A few days would be ideal.
