Wave Rock is located in the wheatbelt region of Western Australia near the town of Hyden.
Wave Rock is a curved granite cliff face that resembles a breaking wave. The cliff face is 15 metres high and 110 metres long and is a unique and imposing geological structure.
The rock’s unique shape is the result of weathering and water erosion, undercutting the base and rounding the overhang. The distinctive colour scheme of the cliff face (stripes of red, brown, yellow and grey) are stains of carbonates and iron hydroxide caused by water springs during the wet season.
It is estimated that the rock is about 2,700 million years old.
Other interesting rock formations within the Wave Rock Reserve include King Rocks, the Hippo’s Yawn, the Humps and Mulka’s cave.
Location: Hyden is located 350 kilometres south east of the city of Perth.
