Kulin’s horse racing history dates back to the 1920s and the Kulin Bush Races are now an integral part of the community calendar.
The weekend incorporates horse racing, a gymkhana, novelty events, entertainment for children, live music, fireworks, great food and good country hospitality.
The event is held 20 kilometres east of Kulin, on Holt Rock Road, at the Jilakin Race Track. The Jilakin Race Track is situated in picturesque surroundings; overlooking Jilakin Lake and in the shadow of Jilakin Rock. A climb to the top of Jilakin Rock provides spectacular vistas of the surrounding Wheatbelt region.
The road out to Jilakin Race Track is known as the Tin Horse Highway, due to the curious display of tin horses that have been placed along it. The tin horses are created each year to celebrate the bush races and are made from an array of materials.
Other features of the area include the unusual rock formations known as Buckley’s Breakaway and the Dragon Rocks Nature Reserve.
The bush races were held on the weekend of 3 October 2008.
Location: the town of Kulin is located 285 kilometres east of Perth.
