Super Pit
Rating
7.09
ranking: 98

The Super Pit is located on the outskirts of Kalgoorlie-Boulder in the area that was once known as the Golden Mile.

More than 50 million ounces of gold have been collected from the Golden Mile since 1883, when Paddy Hannan, Dan Shea and Tom Flanagan discovered gold in the area.

The Golden Mile area has since been incorporated into what is today known as the Super Pit. This prominent Kalgoorlie-Boulder landmark will eventually measure 3.8 kilometres in length, 1.4 kilometres in width and will reach a depth of over 500 metres.

The Super Pit concept came into being during the 1980s, when Western Australian businessman Alan Bond began buying the individual mine leases in the Golden Mile area. The Bond takeover was not completed, but the leases in the area were amalgamated in 1989 and Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines Pty Ltd (KCGM) was formed.

KCGM now manages the Super Pit for joint owners Newmont Australia Ltd and Barrick Gold of Australia Ltd. The Super Pit is the largest open pit gold mine in Australia and produces up to 900,000 ounces of gold every year.

The Super Pit lookout is located off the Goldfields Highway on Hainault Road. Tours of the Super Pit run in conjunction with Boulder Market Day on the third Sunday of every month, from the Super Pit Shop on Burt Street in Boulder.

Location: Kalgoorlie is located 595 kilometres east of the city of Perth.

The Super Pit (aka Fimiston Open Pit) is reputed to be the richest square mile of gold bearing earth in the world. Can be seen from space and will eventually stretch 3.8 km long, 1.35km wide and go down to a depth of more than 500m.

You can't get much closer to a working mine than this. The trucks look like toy trucks the mine is so big.
