Jurien Bay is surrounded by a string of islands and reefs that became known as the Jurien Bay Marine Park in 2003.
The marine park protects the important part of Western Australia’s coast between Wedge Island and Green Head. The area has significant seabird breeding areas and is home to the Australian sea lion – world’s rarest species of sea lion. The Leeuwin Current supports the biological communities of the area, which is populated with temperate and tropical plants and animals.
The bay’s calm waters make it ideal for an array of water-based activities, including snorkelling or diving in the marine park. There is safe swimming within the tranquil area created by the inland harbour, or good surfing conditions can be found at the other beaches in the bay.
All the beaches in the area have pristine white sands and enticing clear waters; perfect for a cool and relaxing swim during the hot summer months. The area also hosts ideal conditions for windsurfing and skin diving, as well as recreational fishing and crabbing.
The old jetty at Jurien is of historical significance. It was used in the 1890s to load wool and stock on to boats for shipping to Fremantle and India.
Location: Jurien Bay is situated 226 kilometres north of the city of Perth.
