The HMAS Sydney Memorial commemorates the 645 sailors who lost their lives when the HMAS Sydney II sank on 19 November 1941.
The HMAS Sydney II was engaged in a battle with the German raider HSK Kormoran off the coast of Western Australia when it went down. The HSK Kormoran was damaged, but 317 of her 400 crew survived.
The Finding Sydney Foundation initiated a search for HMAS Sydney II on 3 March 2008. On Wednesday 12 March 2008, the wreck of HSK Kormoran was located approximately 112 nautical miles off the Western Australian coast.
The wreck of HMAS Sydney was located 12.2 nautical miles from the wreck of HSK Kormoran on Sunday 16 March 2008.
The HMAS Sydney memorial in Geraldton commemorates those who fought and sacrificed their lives for their country.
The beautifully designed memorial features a spectacular silver dome comprising 645 seagulls that represent each sailor who served on board the HMAS Sydney II and were lost on that fateful day.
The memorial includes photographs of the ships and of those who were lost, along with the names of the HMAS Sydney II crew members. There is a bronze statue of a woman gazing out to sea and the stele, which is a dramatic monument in a form that represents the bow of the ship.
Location: Geraldton is located 425 kilometres north of the city of Perth.
