For true coastal village charm visit the twin towns of Dongara-Denison.
The name of Dongara is the anglicised version of Thungarra, which is an Aboriginal name that refers to the mouth of the Irwin River and means ‘place of the fur seal’.
Supporting a multimillion-dollar fishing fleet, Dongara-Denison’s beaches and marina provide the ideal aquatic setting for sailing, surfing, fishing, windsurfing or swimming. Or check out the scenic route to Dongara-Denison via the Indian Ocean Drive.
Fisherman's Lookout at Point Leander in Port Denison features sweeping views of the ocean. Stand on the boardwalk and watch the waves rolling in over the reef. Look the other way and view the hustle and bustle of the fishing boat harbour. The lookout also hosts a stone beacon that was erected in 1869 to guide ships into the port. The beacon is now a monument that commemorates the Leander, which was wrecked in 1853.
Location: Dongara and Port Denison are located 360 kilometres north of the city of Perth via the Brand Highway.
